story behind the film

THE STORY

In the summer of 1963, approximately 200 children, some as young as 10-years-old, were arrested for protesting at the segregated Martin Theater in Americus, GA. More than 15 girls “disappeared.” Never charged with a crime, they sat in a Civil War-era stockade for nearly 60 days without their families being informed of their whereabouts. The goal was to break their spirits and punish them for fighting for their rights. Their captives did not anticipate their courage, faith, and resolve.

Despite their lives being threatened, being fed half-raw meat, sleeping on a concrete floor, and drinking rust-filled water, THE GIRLS SURVIVED! With the gift of creative and magical thinking, they were able to disappear into a world of fantasy to preserve their spirits and fight another day. Inspired by true events, The Rebel Girls is about the strength of sisterhood, the resilience of family, and the power of love.

The Rebel Girls is written, directed, and produced by Felicia D. Henderson (First Kill, The Punisher, Soul Food) and stars Nika King (Euphoria, Possum Trot), Kyanna Simone (The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat, Winning Time), Honey Robinson (My Dream Quinceañera, The Rookie), Nia Washington (Yellowjackets, Bel Air), Josephine Lawrence (Raising Kanan, 9-1-1), Maxcianna Saintilus (Choices), Avynn Crowder-Jones (Rap Sh!t, Here and Now), and Asia Holiday (I Hate You To Death, Get on Up).
